1,550 MBBS Seats may be added to TN government - Eklavya Overseas
Eklavya Overseas. December 15, 2019
The Medical Council of India has received applications from government aided and self-financed medical institutions in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu requesting to consider their plea for increasing the allotment of medical seats for aspiring candidates. If approved it might result in an increment by 1500 seats in the existing candidature capacity of medical institutions in the state of Tamil Nadu. The zenith body controlling and regulating all medical institutions in India, MCI has already given its nod of approval forKovai Medical Center in Coimbatore and CSI Medical College and Research in Madurai for adding 150 more seats to their existing capacity of enrolling medical aspirants and entrants. Additionally it has also suggested two other colleges’ names, St Peters’ Medical College and Panimalar Medical College for being appraised by 150 seats each. It should be noted that all the above mentioned medical colleges are self-financed institutions and are not incumbents of government aid in any form.
Previously the MCI had relegated Annapoorna Medical College in Salem, Madha Medical College, Chennai and Annai Medical College, Kancheepuram for exceeding their admission capacity of medical candidates by misrepresenting faculty strength and infrastructural resources. In a turnaround to its previous stance of relegating the above mentioned colleges for 2 years from conducting admissions for medical courses, the MCI allowed the colleges to function normally from 2019 and allotted them a seat limit of 150 each. If all the self-financed institutions receive a nod of approval from MCI, subsequent to campus inspections for adequate faculty, resources and accreditation, they would combine to account for 1200 additional seats. With 22 government colleges in the state, each applying for an increase of 100 seats for admission in medical courses, it may set the notch slightly higher for medical aspirants to get admitted into courses of their preference.
