Cabinet Clears Medical Commission Bill

A Cabinet meeting under the chairmanship of the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has cleared the new Medical Commission Bill 2017 replacing the Medical Council of India (MCI) with the National Medical Commission (NMC) in order to maintain transparency in medical regulation. The National Medical Commission Bill 2017 is proposed to transform the medical sector and recommends an exit exam for medical graduates for obtaining the license to practice their profession in India. The NMC Bill also recommends annual inspections of medical colleges similar to the MCI.

Some of the Important Points of NMC include

1. There would be 25 members in the National Medical Commission (NMC).
2. The NMC will comprise five elected members and the rest of the members will be included through the selection procedure. (Previously, the MCI had only elected members).
3. The NMC will comprise four autonomous boards having different responsibilities, including MBBS and PG education, Rating of MBBS colleges and universities and recognition assessment respectively.
4. There would be an additional board for taking care of doctor’s registration and medical ethics enforcements.
