Thalassemia Patient Attempts Get Admission MBBS

Eklavya Overseas. December 15, 2019

Digant Jain, 21 years old, cleared the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) in June and has already appeared for counseling at the state-run Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (IPU), but has yet to get an admission, which might be because he’s suffering from the rare disease, Thalassemia. Even after having won a favorable ruling from the high court, Digant has not been admitted to the course, which commenced from August-end. Jain had applied for the course in general category, since Thalassemia wasn’t considered a disability then, but due to notifications pertaining to the Rights of Persons with Disability (PWD), he had to write a letter to change his category in July from general to PWD.

His letter was accepted by the IPU on July 7, and his name was also added in the PWD category list, and then later slotted in the PWD category list on the IPU website. After not being selected for the first round of counseling, Jain, then went for the second session on 8 august. But, troublingly, after the counseling, his name still wasn’t mentioned in the list of the students who had been selected for the university. IPU filed an affidavit in court on 7th September, writing that they would need to be granted permission from MCI (Medical Council of India) to permit Jain to be admitted in the university. Unable to get a reply from MCI, the university converted the PWD seat into general category and all the seats were eventually filled. “That’s when he came to know that his name did not figure in the PWD category at all — even though he had changed the status from general to disabled category. A patient with Thalassemia cannot be denied admission,” said V K Jain who has decided to file a contempt petition in the court and seek justice for his son.
