TN slams Exit Test proposed in the NMC Bill - Eklavya Overseas
Eklavya Overseas. December 15, 2019
Tamil Nadu is the only state having maximum number of state-run medical colleges. In order to review the National Medical Commission (NMC) Bill, Tamil Nadu sends a letter to a parliamentary standing committee and raises suspicions over the newly proposed NMC bill replacing the MCI. According to the letter, the bill "portrays a lack of understanding of ground realities and the principles of federalism enshrined in our constitution." It has also opposed the exit exam proposed in the NMC Bill 2017 for all MBBS graduates. Previously, the state was forced to apply the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) in their admission procedure. There are more than one million doctors in Tamil Nadu. The state justifies that the NMC will transfer all the powers and authorities to center and undermine the powers of state government.
The health secretary of Tamil Nadu Shri J Radhakrishnan not only opposed the NMC Bill, 2017, but also sought exemption from the NEET in his five-page letter to the parliamentary standing committee. Tamil Nadu has expressed differences on a few provisions of the NMC bill 2017 proposed to replace the Medical Council Act, 1956. Whereas, the state acknowledges the requirements of the amendments in the present regulatory system of the MCI. The states possesses no longer influence in policy making related to curriculum and designing of MBBS courses, etc. and such things would not be unacceptable to Tamil Nadu.
