Students with 0 in PCB in NEET got into MBBS colleges

A recent report in a leading newspaper of India has brought to light the utter plight and lackadaisical state of the education system and their governing bodies in India. According to the same, over the past two years at least 600 students with marks between 0-9 in the non-medical science subjects and at least over 200 students with zero or negative marks in the same category have not only successfully cleared NEET entrance exams but also secured admission in the top medical colleges of India in much desired MBBS courses. This major setback was mainly due to the revised assessment pattern introduced by the governing body MCI which swapped the existing system of mandatory 50% scores with a more flexible percentile system. This was accompanied by dropping the criteria of minimum marks required in subsidiary science subjects for being eligible to apply for a course in medicine. As a result, securing a seat in a MBBS in a reputed college has never been an easier cake walk.

In this system of evaluation almost 1990 students who got admitted in their desired choice of MBBS courses in the year 2017 managed to secure only 20.8% while almost 500 students who got admitted into prestigious medicine courses in private colleges scored either zero, or single digit marks or negative in individual subjects on their road to glory. This exposes the fact that not only is the current evaluation system of talent in the competitive entrance exams erroneous and flawed but it is a glaring compromise of medical and health care standards of this country in the future.
