Students of NIOS make a move against MCI - Eklavya Overseas
Eklavya Overseas. December 15, 2019
Noida: More than 30 students of NIOS (National Institute of Open Schooling) have approached the High court of Delhi against the resolution made by the MCI (Medical Council of India) prohibiting them for showing up in NEET EXAM 2018 wishing to set the decision aside which is taken by the MCI. The Times of India had reported on February the 14th 2018 that the decision suddenly taken by the Medical Council of India states that the students of National Institute of Open Schooling would not be allowed to enrol themselves in NEET EXAM because their level of studying doesn’t match the level of regular students. It has affected the students of open school severely. These students have been preparing for the exams for more than 2 years to get a seat in medical colleges.
The National Institute of Open Schooling was informed about the change on November the 3rd , 2018 that was 3 months prior to the last date to apply for NEET exam. Students felt the sudden surge of anxiety, their dreams of becoming a doctor were shattered. The students of NIOS prepared for the NEET for the last few years. Around 30,000 students of National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) from different regions who would appear in Class 12 board examination in April 2018 were expecting to enrol in the NEET Exam as per records. A NIOS student, Rakshanda Surana has filed a petition against the MCI decision. Rakshanda Surana is an orphan living in Gurgaon who was preparing for NEET Exam with 29 other NIOS students. She said, “I wanted to become a doctor and started preparing for NEET exam in 2014. It was not very easy as I do not have monetary help from anyone.
However, just 60 days before the exam, I got to know that NIOS students have been debarred by the MCI from appearing in NEET exam this year. All of us are really distracted and could not focus on our preparation” Article 14, 16 and 21 states that “The exclusion of students who have passed 10+2 from Open School, private candidates and students who have not undertaken two years of regular and continuous study of Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Bio-Technology at 10+2 level, from admission to medical colleges is arbitrary, illegal and violative” The appeal states that the Medical Council of India has decided to only accept the degree issued by the CBSE and decided to reject the degree issued by the NIOS or other open schools which are set up by the state government. The Medical Council of India has decided to accept the degree issued by the CISCE i.e. Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations, which is not accepted by any statutory or state authority.
