More Students opting for Non Clinical Courses

A study of the recent successful NEET aspirants has revealed more and more students opting for non-clinical courses in medical and dental colleges over the span of a period of time of observation. This is a sharp contrast to the Medical Council of India’s proposal for reducing the staff strength of non-medical Post Graduate teachers in non-clinical roles in medical colleges by half, from 30% to 15%. The National MSc Teachers Association has been vociferously protesting this drastic measure and has labelled it as a conspiracy by the MCI to dampen and relegate the opportunities and prospects of non-medical post graduate teachers and scholars to a distant background.Mr Pant, a representative speaker for the NMMTA elaborated how Msc medical teachers are always perceived and treated as poorer cousins of their counterparts who are doctors and face an unfair bias in their professional statures in their workplace.

If this continues to be the norm, present NEET results which are not consistent with students opting for clinical careers to be the majority, should soon overwhelm the diminishing strength of medical teachers who are doctors in medical and dental colleges and trigger turning the tables eventually. Non-medical teachers are specifically those certified postgraduates in medical science specialising in non-clinical subjects like anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, microbiology and biochemistry.  With the current trend showing that these candidates are medical professionals, shall enjoy majority in the near future, the Health Ministry admitted it was compelled to review the purported disparity with regards to the opportunities and equality for the concerned category of teaching staff.
