Just 4 Students Qualified for MBBS in Tamil Nadu

Eklavya Overseas. December 15, 2019

In an abysmal display of education in Government schools in Tamil Nadu, only four students from the state-run schools could make to the prestigious MBBS this year. But, statistically, it is a 100% rise as only two candidates were selected the previous year. Tamil Nadu has 22 government-run medical colleges with a total capacity of 2, 447 MBBS seats. Going by this figure, the government schooled students bagged only 0.16% of seats this year. In 2016, a total of 30 Government school students were selected for MBBS when admission was given based on Class XII marks. With just two seats up from 2017, the state selection committee has released a data showing a steep 80% decrease in admission compared to 2016. However, the performance of the government-aided school is a bit better with 26 students getting selection for MBBS courses.

According to Dr. G R Ravindranath, NEET is leaving behind students who can't afford to pay high fees to study in high-end universities. Students from Government schools can't compete with private school candidates, and it may take years to prepare them. Errors in the question paper was another disadvantage for Government school students, feel K Kamatchi, a Class XII biology teacher. Further, the order of the High Court to offer 196 additional marks was turned down by the Supreme Court. But, they encourage more students to take up the exam. Admission to Medical and dental colleges is made based on the marks obtained on NEET-2018 which is conducted by the State Selection Committee. Further, 69% of the seat is reserved for the backward SC/ST communities.

In 2018, getting admission to MBBS courses was tougher compared to 2017. Even for a reserved category student had to score 200 to gain admission, which was 161 last year. The score difference compared to the previous year was 39 for ST, 88 for MBCs, and 42 marks higher for open category. According to G Selvarajan, half of the students admitted to MBBS courses in 2018 were who took a year-break for studies. About 1680 students were of Class XII 2017 batch, and 120 were from 2016. An astonishing 51% of student have taken a break to improve their NEET score. In the NEET 2018, the topper scored 676 marks, and 81 students scored more than 550 marks in both 2017 and 2018. But the gap has increased as the score has gone down in subsequent years. The State Selection Committee hold mop-up counseling to fill two seats in Government medical colleges, 9 in dental colleges and 19 others in private medical colleges according to the sources.
