Court Allows Non Biology Students to Pursue MBBS

In a startling development, a recent ruling by the Rajasthan High Court has permitted students who did not opt for Biology as their additional subject in their higher secondary certificate examinations to be eligible for admission into MBBS courses provided they clear the common entrance exams successfully and secure a rank necessary to be admitted into a medical college for pursuing a stream of medicine of their choice. Based on the petition filed by two students Neha Chaudhary and Suraj Bansal, who were denied the opportunity to choose and pursue a MBBS course in medical colleges despite qualifying by clearing NEET exams successfully, the court ruled in the favour of petitioners by directing the concerned authorities to facilitate their admission.

The two students were initially denied admission despite having necessary qualifications and the merit because they did not have biology as their additional subject in their higher secondary school certificate curriculum. However the court clearly made evident that the students had proven their eligibility for their opted courses by clearing the common entrance exam NEET successfully.  Moving forward the court issued a directive that students who clear NEET successfully with requisite merit scores cannot be denied admission into MBBS courses in a stream of medicine of their preference based on the grounds that they did not have Biology in their higher secondary syllabus. Including Biology in the higher secondary choice of subjects of assessment was thereby not deemed mandatory anymore, moving forward for students to get admission in MBBS courses provided they meet pre-requisite merit standards by clearing the common entrance exam NEET successfully.
