Color Blind Students Granted Admission in MBBS

The Supreme Court of India has allowed two color blind students to take admission in the medical college to pursue their dream of MBBS. The court noticed that the colleges and Medical Council of India could not deny them admission as they have scored high marks in their entrance exams. The court had to evoke the article 142 of the constitution that gave them the power to pass the order in this unique case of the color blindness. In 2015, these two students gained exceptional marks in their pre NEET examinations that were helped by Tripura government.

It has to be noted that even without the provision for the color blind students, the colleges and MCI cannot deny the admission, but they did as they are suffering from Color Vision Deficiency (CVD) which is commonly known as color blindness. Even with great marks, the students were not allowed to get admission in the Tripura universities or the medical council of India. The jury headed by Justice Dipak Mishra noted in the judgment that to give the admission to these students, the respondent college needs to reduce the quota of admission by two seats in the year 2018-19 for the course of MBBS. Justices Amitava Roy and A.M. Khanwilkar were also part of the panel.

The students challenged the decision of the colleges before but were unsuccessful, and the case got dragged on which caused, even more, frustration because they have got good marks and were a suitable candidate for the admission in the MBBS course. This judgment has come as a relief for the students. The news will surely be a welcome relief for them.
