About Uzbekistan

Bordered by Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan on each side, Uzbekistan does not have a coastline and is a double landlocked country. Parts of the country were conquered by Alexander the Great in 327 BC, followed by the rule of Hephthalites and the Sassanid Empires until the Russian Empire occupied Uzbekistan as the last ruling country. After the Soviet-Afghan war of 1989, Uzbekistan finally declared independence in 1991. The aftereffects of the widespread destruction during wars can still be seen in the old parts of Samarkand and Bukhara. You can visit the Karakum Desert, which features huge dunes, or just relax on the shore of the Amu Darya River, which is one of the major sources of irrigation in Uzbekistan.
