Institute of Medicine (IOM)was established in 1972, in Kathmandu, Nepal. IOM is the first medical college to impart and conduct MBBS program, in Nepal, since 1978. The college provides comprehensive healthcare education, research and training facilities to medical professionals. The vision of the inception of the medical institute and the hospital was to provide affordable and professional delivery of healthcare facilities. The institution is affiliated to Tribhuvan University (TU). The various medical degree and diploma courses are recognized by the Nepal Medical Council (NMC), Medical Council of India (MCI) etc.IOM has international linkage programs with diverse Medical governing councils and bodies like, CPSP (College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan).
The college is renowned for its courses with various specializations in Anatomy, Internal Medicine, Surgery, Pathology, Biochemistry, ENT, Microbiology, Forensic Medicine, and Paediatrics etc. Admission to 5 and a half years’ MBBS course inclusive of one year’s internship period is based on the previous academic records. The minimum required aggregate score is 50%, in the qualifying examinations like HSC, 10+2, I.Sc “A” Level etc., with Physics, Biology, Chemistry and English. The minimum age for an undergraduate medical student has to be 17, on the year of admission. Total number of annual available seats for MBBS program is 43.
Rigorous practice, under the guidelines of NMC, is conducted through edifying lectures, diverse training modules, introduction to intensive care medicine and pain, Anesthesiology clinic, performance procedural training, in Operation Theatres and Intensive Care Units. Interactive tutorials, case study presentations, brain-storming sessions, problem solving skills training, are all part of the curriculum. Integrated and inter-departmental conferences and seminars, national and international workshops are conducted regularly. Research on contemporary medicine and surgical procedures is given due significance. Community exposure forms an integral part of the curriculum.
IOM-affiliated485-bedded, multi-specialty Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital is equipped with super-specialized, digitalized, multi-department laboratories, a Central Laboratory, and operation theatres, for catering to diverse investigations in Microbiology, Anesthesiology, Biochemistry, Radiology, Plastic Surgery, Pediatric Surgery etc. The digitalized laboratories are well-equipped for conducting various investigations using Radiography, CT scan, Digital C-Arm, Mammography, MRI, Ultra-sound, ECG, Automatic Analyzer etc. The campus boasts of, audio-visually-aided lecture halls, museums, digitalized Departmental Libraries, sate-of-the-art Central Library, demonstration room, dissection hall, modernized computer labs, Internet connectivity, seminar hall, sports complex, playground, and separate hostel for girls and boys, mess facilities, cultural activity centre, ATM, canteen, telecommunication and transportation services, and much more, for dissemination of world-class educational services to students.
IOM faculty consists of distinguished medical practitioners who are regularly involved with various intensive and extensive, community-oriented, participatory and clinical research projects. Most of the professors are renowned specialists in their own respective Pre-Clinical, Para Clinical and Clinical disciplines. Faculty regularly participates in CMEs, various national and international conferences etc. The department of medicine provides numerous research papers and journals in various medical publications, nationally and internationally. IOM publishes the oldest medical journal in Nepal, Journal of Institute of Medicine (JIOM), since 1979.The annual tuition fee for MBBS is Rs. 3,50,000 approximately, which is subject to change based on the decisions of the college administration.
