Chhattisgarh's MBBS Students to Return Bonds and Scholarship Amounts

According to a report, more than 300 pass-out students from three government medical colleges in the state will have to return the bond plus stipend – scholarship amount to the government. All the students are from the 2012-2013 batch, who have not served for two-year rural service as stated in the rule. Not accepting the order, the students challenged the rule in the High Court and argued to return the bonds amount. The Department has clarified their stand stating if they don’t go to rural service, the very purpose of rural service won’t be served. It will be a disregard for laws that were created. The High court has ruled and asked the student to obey the laws. The students further reiterated that the amount determined by the government would be returned. Despite the Court verdict, the Department has not issued the order. But, according to Dr. Lakhan Singh, Professor of SIMs, the court decision will get implementation.

For General Class Students

The amount of bond is Rs 5 lakh, and the internship stipend is Rs 8 thousand with Rs 96 thousand in twelve months. Thus, the total amount is 5.96 lakh. But, they do not get the scholarship amount.

For OBC students

For OBC student, 3 lakhs for bond and 96 thousand for the stipend, amounting to 3.96 lakh. They have got 25 thousand as scholarship.

For ST / SC students

The ST student has got three lakhs as bond amount along with 96 thousand rupees stipend. The amount of scholarship is 50 thousand rupees.

Increased Bonds Amount from 2017

The State Government has increased the bonds amount for the students from 2017. It has risen to 25 lakhs for General category, 20 lakhs for SC/ST category students. That is why students have expressed their inability to deposit such a big sum. The experts have said if students deposit this amount it will add crores of rupees to the Government treasury. Rather, it is also an implementation of the order.

Rural Service is Compulsory

The court has ordered to return the amount of scholarship to the students. The provision of rural was made compulsory to compensate for the lack of doctors in the health centres. It also becomes a good learning curve for students going there, said Dr. Ashok Chandrakar, Director of Medical Education in Chhattisgarh.
